Classic Monopoly Rules

1. Game Setup

  • Place the board on a flat surface.
  • Shuffle the Chance and Community Chest cards and place them facedown in their respective spaces.
  • Select a token to represent your position on the board.
  • Each player starts with $1,500 in play money, distributed as follows:
    • 2 × $500, 4 × $100, 1 × $50, 1 × $20, 2 × $10, 1 × $5, and 5 × $1.
  • The Banker manages the money, properties, houses, and hotels.

2. Starting the Game

  • Players roll two dice. The highest roller goes first.
  • Place your token on “GO,” roll the dice, and move clockwise according to the total.
  • Follow the action of the space you land on.

3. Gameplay Basics

  • Passing “GO”: Collect $200 each time you pass “GO.”
  • Buying Property: If you land on an unowned property, you can buy it at the listed price. If you decline, the property is auctioned.
  • Paying Rent: If you land on a property owned by another player, pay the rent listed on the Title Deed card.
  • Building Houses and Hotels: Once you own all properties in a color group, you can buy houses. Build evenly across the group until you have four houses on each property. Upgrade to a hotel by exchanging four houses and paying the hotel cost.
  • Mortgages: You can mortgage properties to raise cash. Pay the mortgage value plus 10% interest to lift the mortgage.

4. Special Spaces

  • Chance and Community Chest: Draw a card and follow the instructions.
  • Income Tax: Pay $200 or 10% of your total assets.
  • Go to Jail: Move your token directly to “Jail” and skip collecting $200 if passing “GO.”
  • Free Parking: A resting spot with no penalties or rewards.

5. Ending the Game

The game ends when all but one player is bankrupt. The last remaining player wins.

Speed Die Rules

The Speed Die is an optional addition for a faster-paced game.

How to Play:

  1. Give each player an extra $1,000 at the start.
  2. Start using the Speed Die after passing “GO” for the first time.
  3. Roll the Speed Die along with the standard dice. The outcomes include:
    • 1, 2, or 3: Add the number to your roll.
    • Bus: Choose to move the value of one die, the other die, or the total.
    • Mr. Monopoly: Move to the nearest unowned property or the next property where you owe rent.
